Sunday, a South Sudanese refugee living in Kakuma, struggled with academic writing and public speaking in high school until last year, when she enrolled in the Global English Language (GEL) programme – made available to her school as part of JWL’s efforts to support young women’s enrolment in higher education.

She continued her English Language studies with JWL after high school and is now at C1 level. Reflecting on this experience, she credits the GEL programme for boosting her confidence, English proficiency, and encouraging her to pursue her studies.

“I believe in the empowerment of education, fueled by compassion, to advocate for peace,” she says. Passionate about advocating for human rights and wanting to become a peace advocate in her home country, Sunday plans to apply for the Certificate in Liberal Studies and explore other opportunities to further her education.
