Hima comes from Anjengo, a fishing-dependent village in India’s Kerala District. She joined the Global English Language programme (GEL) for professional purposes, but it turned into more than that. “After joining this course my perspective was changed,” she says, adding that, “It developed a learning habit and helped me to know cultural diversities.”

Along the way, she became a more confident public speaker and decided to help fellow members of her community improve their English language skills. Hima completed C1 level (having joined at B1+) and is now a GEL facilitator.

“Opportunities are very limited for our people. It is because of their poor language skills and identity issues. JWL provided me an opportunity to improve my skills. So, I would like to remain as a GEL teacher in my community and to help our students to improve their language skills.”
