Who we are?

Learning together to transform the world

Jesuit Worldwide Learning: Higher Education at the Margins (JWL) is a collaborative global partnership comprised of organisations, institutions, companies, and above all, people, to provide tertiary education to those who would otherwise not have access to higher learning opportunities. It draws on the rich and centuries long Jesuit tradition of higher education and through a blended on-site and online approach mobilises the resources of Jesuit and other worldwide networks of educational institutions.

Work accomplished by many volunteers, local and virtual partnerships, a lean executive team and the commitment from the students over the past nine years continues to move JWL forward in achieving its mission: Learning Together to Transform the World

Our three pillars

Higher education for people at the margins is the core and ultimate purpose of JWL. The highest academic quality and rigour form the central pillar. Jesuit universities and mission-aligned organisations as awarding institutions, together with JWL's  highly qualified academic team, oversee and ensure the quality of this education. JWL wants the best for the 'least'.

The academic teaching of JWL enhances critical thinking, a culture of posing questions and doing systematic research. In partnership with research institutions, JWL studies the impact of higher education in communities at the margins, how it forms and empowers individual leaders and communities to transform their own reality.

Information technology (IT) and the internet form the second pillar of JWL. Ever growing global connectedness allows us to virtually bring the university to marginalised communities anywhere in the world. Rapid technological developments provide new and creative solutions.

IT experts from various partner universities work with our team to find innovative solutions for and support our global community of partners organisations and thousands of students.

JWL stays close to the ground and has built a lean but strong operational capacity which serves as its third pillar. We work hand in hand with partner organisations, community learning centre coordinators and tutors in the field, often in very volatile contexts (conflict and post-conflict situations), where institutions and infrastructures have been destroyed. Our capacity to find flexible and practical solutions in changing environments guarantees that students can finish their online studies.

JWL project and financial reporting and policies and human resource policies are in place to ensure transparency and accountability.

History

In 2010, a private donor supported a three-year pilot project which became known as Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JC:HEM). During the pilot phase, JC:HEM developed a sustainable, scalable, transferable model to ensure those who live at the margins have access to higher education. In this phase, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) was the sole on-site partner, and two academic programmes were developed to serve students: The Diploma of Liberal Studies and Community Service Learning Tracks (CSLTs). The programmes were developed through input from refugees and host community members, as well as input from JRS, faculty, and universities.
In September 2016, JC:HEM changed its name to Jesuit Worldwide Learning - Higher Education at the Margins (JWL).  Fr. Peter Balleis, S.J., was appointed Executive President and global headquarters were moved to Geneva, Switzerland.
