Who we are?

Learning together to transform the world

Jesuit Worldwide Learning: Higher Education at the Margins (JWL) is a collaborative global partnership comprised of organizations, institutions, companies, and above all, people, to provide tertiary education to those who would otherwise not have access to higher learning opportunities. It draws on the rich and centuries long Jesuit tradition of higher education and through a blended on-site and on-line approach mobilizes the resources of Jesuit and other worldwide networks of educational institutions.

Work accomplished from many volunteers, local and virtual partnerships, a lean executive team and the commitment from the students over the past seven years continues to move JWL forward in achieving its mission: “Learning Together to Transform the World”.

Our three pillars

Higher Education for people at the margins is the core and ultimate purpose of JWL. The highest academic quality and rigor form the central pillar. Jesuit Universities and mission aligned organizations as awarding institutions, together with the highly qualified academic team of JWL oversee and assure the quality of this education. JWL wants the best for the least.

The academic teaching of JWL enhances critical thinking, a culture of posing questions and doing systematic research. In partnership with research institutions, JWL studys the impact of higher education in communities at the margins, how it forms and empowers individual leaders and communities to transform their own reality.

Information Technology (IT) and the internet form the second pillar of JWL. Ever growing global connectedness allows to bring the University via online to marginalized communities at any place on the globe. Rapid technological developments provide new and creative solutions.

IT experts from various partner Universities work with the JWL CIO and IT staff to find solutions and support a global community of thousands of students and partner organisations. JWL explores with IT companies new and innovative ways. The IT support team keeps the daily online operation running and every student and learning community connected.

JWL stays close to the ground and has built a lean but strong operational capacity which serves as third pillar. JWL operates hand in hand with partner organisations, community learning centres' coordinators and tutors in the field, often in very volatile countries, in conflict and post conflict situations, where institutions and infrastructures have been destroyed. This capacity to find flexible and practical solutions in changing environments guarantees that students can finish their online studies.

JWL operates in a transparent and accountable manner. Project and financial reporting and policies and human resource policies are in place and transparent.

History

In 2010, a private donor supported a three-year pilot project which became known as Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JC:HEM). During the pilot phase, JC:HEM developed a sustainable, scalable, transferrable model to ensure those who live at the margins have access to higher education. In this phase, Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) was the sole on-site partner, and two academic programs were developed to serve students: The Diploma of Liberal Studies and Community Service Learning Tracks (CSLTs). The programs were developed through input from refugees and host community members, and with input from JRS, faculty, and Universities.
In September 2016, JC:HEM changed its name to Jesuit Worldwide Learning Higher Education at the Margins (JWL).  Fr. Peter Balleis, S.J., was appointed Executive President and the global headquarters was moved to Geneva, Switzerland.
