At a summit organised by the Holy See in Geneva on the occasion of the 30-year anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, ‘Education as a Driver to Integral Growth and Peace’ book was also launched.

Die Vereinten Nationen in Genf gedenken in diesen Tagen der dreißigjährigen Unterzeichnung der Rechte für Kinder. Im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten lud der Heilige Stuhl mehrere Gäste aus Weltpolitik, Katholischer Kirche und Humanitären Organisationen zu einem Gipfel ein. Es wurde über die Bedeutung von Bildung für das Wohl und die Entwicklung von Kindern sowie die Verbindung zwischen Menschenrechten und Bildung diskutiert. Im Rahmen des Podiumsgesprächs wurde außerdem die Sammelschrift ‚Education as a Driver to Integral Growth and Peace’ vorgestellt. Ich habe für das Bildungswerk Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) ebenfalls einen Artikel beigetragen. Darin unterstreiche ich das Friedenspotential von Hochschulbildung in Krisengebieten wie Afghanistan. Durch das Bildungswerk JWL wurde in einigen Regionen Nord- und Westafghanistans bereits ein bedeutender Meilenstein in der Überwindung von Gewalt und Terror hin zu einer Kultur der Werte und des gegenseitigen Respekts gelegt.
Mehrere Podiumsteilnehmer betonten gerade die Wichtigkeit von Werten innerhalb eines Bildungssystems: Eine Kultur des Respekts, der Gastfreundschaft, des Zuhörens und der Verantwortung kann nur über die konkrete Vermittlung von Werten realisiert werden. Gerade hier kann die Kirche, die Ordensgemeinschaften und die zahlreichen glaubensbasierten Organisationen viel bieten. Und doch ist man im Bildungsbereich häufig einem Trend zur Ökonomisierung von Studien gegenübergestellt.
Das Potential von Bildung via Internet wird beispielsweise in vielen Teilen der Welt unterschätzt; online erworbene Abschlüsse werden noch immer in mehreren Ländern als minderwertig gesehen. Die internationalen Gemeinschaft aber auch die Katholische Kirche müssen Bildungszugänge, wertbasierte Bildungssysteme und die Anerkennung von internationalen Abschlüssen mehr fördern. Hier liegt noch viel Arbeit vor uns.
The United Nations are commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, in Geneva. Within the scope of the celebrations the Holy See invited several guests from politics, the Catholic Church and humanitarian organisations to an international summit to discuss the importance of education for the welfare and development of children as well as the connection between education and human rights. A new book was presented: ‘Education as a Driver to Integral Growth and Peace’. Pascal Meyer SJ, a JWL co-worker from the Geneva team, wrote also contributed an article for the book about the peace potential of higher education for crisis region like Afghanistan. JWL has set a milestone in overcoming terror and violence towards a culture of values and mutual respect.
Several participants of the summit emphasised the importance of values within education: A culture of respect, hospitality, listening and responsibility can only be realised through values. Especially in the field of virtues the church, religious orders and faith-based organisations could offer a lot. However we often face a tendency towards an economisation of studies in many parts of the world. The high potential of online learning is being underestimated; online diploma are not always accepted by governments and educational institutions. The international community as well as the Catholic Church must help to foster access to education, value based education systems and the recognition of international degrees. There is still a lot of work ahead of us.
